About the Artist

Kathi Thompson - Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am at home in longing… to understand how an obstruction can offer an unplanned direction. Through dynamic mark making, visual tension and contrasting perspectives, I seek to bring a sense of wonder and balance seen within transitions. Using water as a metaphor for transformation and to symbolize human relationships, my paintings reflect this exploration.

The images are a map of no place that exists, and within a visual space that moves above and below the surface, through both memories and lingering questions. By viewing water as a metaphor for our changing world, my painting practice enables me to engage through a wider reflective lens, questioning our place in it all. Looking more deeply than my own personal experience, I use the painting process to understand the unsettling environment in which we live. The paintings become a place where it is possible to question, find balance and see possibilities in trying times.

BIOGRAPHY

Through her work Thompson explores how conversations may colour our interpersonal relationships. Using abstract images, her pieces serve as a catalyst for exploring how our memories affect us, and our perspective may influence our understanding of divergent perspectives.

Thompson’s artistic journey is marked by her willingness to embrace material fluidity. In the way she moves from painting on canvas or paper, to combining seaside debris with discarded images, she creates a physical metaphor of how differing perspectives might coexist. Her unconventional blending reflects a deep engagement with environmental themes.

Thompson received her Bachelor of Fine Art from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She also holds a Master of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Her paintings and sculptures have been displayed in exhibitions across Canada and Europe, with pieces featured in regional galleries, government offices and private collections.
